The Orientation on the Supreme Court Stylebook, held on October 9-10, 2024, in Quezon City, was a significant initiative aimed at promoting clarity, consistency, and precision in legal writing, particularly for the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET). The two-day workshop, attended by select Secretariat employees and their counterparts from the Senate and the Supreme Court, was led by Atty. Luis Jose F. Geronimo and other esteemed resource persons from the Office of the Chairperson, Senior Associate Justice Marvic Mario Victor F. Leonen.
Central to the discussions was the Supreme Court Stylebook, which the SET adopted as a guide for a unified system of legal writing and copyediting, essential to drafting contracts, orders, resolutions, and other legal documents. Participants were guided through key principles of legal writing, including proper word choice, grammar, inclusive language, and citation practices. Discussions also underscored the transformative power of language—how precise words can inspire and empower, while imprecise language can impede justice.
By standardizing legal writing practices, the workshop highlighted language’s vital role in upholding justice, transparency, and equity. Equipped with the skills gained, participants are now better prepared to contribute to a legal system where clarity in writing ensures justice is accessible, equitable, and meaningful for all.
